Construction of the bridges
Converting the former railway line between Aue and Wolfsgrün to the bicycle route
From 2010–2013 the former railway line between Aue and Wolfsgrün was turned into a bike path. Here are pictures of the work on the Bockau Tunnel and the former railway bridges. It was quite a challenge since the route has not been used for rail traffic since 1995, and was in very poor repair. The bridges were in particularly poor condition.
There were seven steel bridges from 34 to 71 meters long on this 11 km long section of the Chemnitz-Aue-Adorf line that needed to be rebuilt to carry bicycle traffic.
Bicycle traffic is so much lighter than trains that the bridges could be used. Abutments and bridge bearings were repaired. The steel structures, spanning the bridge piers were repaired, sandblasted and given a new corrosion protection. This work was carried out in the majority of the repairs on-site under the protection of an enclosure. However, some structures were removed and rebuilt in a nearby shed. Instead of tracks, the steel structures were now covered in a concrete slab, which – complete with railings – enables cyclists safe crossing of the river Mulde.
